Fennel

Fennel, known as Saunf in India, is a beloved spice cherished for its sweet, aromatic flavour. It plays a versatile role in Indian cooking, found in both whole seed form and as a ground powder. Fennel seeds are often used to season curries, pickles, and spice blends, adding a subtle anise-like sweetness to dishes. They also feature prominently in mouth-fresheners, traditionally chewed after meals for their cooling and digestive properties.

Beyond savoury dishes, fennel adds a refreshing twist to sweets like Paan and Gajak. In beverages, it is often brewed into cooling teas and infusions, making it a staple during hot summers.

Fennel’s health benefits are widely appreciated in Ayurvedic practices, known to improve digestion, reduce bloating, and soothe the stomach. Its gentle, sweet aroma and flavour, along with its medicinal qualities, make fennel an indispensable part of Indian kitchens and traditions.
